Harlech Castle stands on a rocky crag above the Irish Sea, its massive gatehouse and four round towers dominating the skyline of the small town of Harlech. Built between 1283 and 1289 for King Edward I as part of his 'Iron Ring' of North Wales castles, it's considered one of the finest examples of medieval military architecture in Europe, designed by the renowned architect Master James of St George. It's part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site 'Castles and Town Walls of King Edward in Gwynedd', alongside Beaumaris, Conwy and Caernarfon. The castle has seen real drama over the centuries — besieged during the Welsh Wars, held by Owain Glyndŵr as his residence and parliament during the Welsh uprising of the early 1400s, fought over in the Wars of the Roses, and famously the last Royalist stronghold to fall in the English Civil War. Managed by Cadw, it's open daily with seasonal hours (typically 9:30am–5pm in summer, shorter in winter), and there's a lift in the visitor centre giving access to the main level, though the upper towers involve steep, uneven medieval stairs. Dogs on short leads are welcome on the ground floor levels. Parking in Harlech is pay-and-display (£2–£4 depending on length of stay), and it's worth noting the castle sits in the upper part of town — parking lower down means a steep walk up. Around an hour's drive north of Tywyn, it pairs well with a wander around Harlech's compact town centre.
